Insurance experts you can trust with your life.

Ready for anything? We are. For over 30 years, we've been helping Kiwis like you prepare for whatever life serves up.
And if our experience in this industry has taught us anything, it's that those who prepare, thrive—regardless of what happens. So we're here to help you reach your goals even when life takes an unexpected turn. That is what gets us out of bed in the morning.

In other words, we're on your side. You call the shots, then we work our tails off to get you the coverage you need at a price you can afford.
You can sleep easy knowing that everything we do, we do with integrity, diligence and compassion. Those aren't just "values" engraved on a plaque somewhere—that's the honest-to-goodness truth about how we do business.

Don't worry—we're never ever pushy. But we are approachable and available, any time you need a listening ear.

David Cooney

When he got his start in the insurance industry in 1986, David began with a clear goal in mind: to give exceptional insurance advice. "I never wanted to be the biggest firm," he explains. "I've always just wanted to help people plan their lives."

For the past 30 years (and counting), he's done precisely that. And since then he has firmly established himself in the industry, becoming an Authorised Financial Advisor (AFA). He also meets regularly with industry peers to share ideas and develop professionally.

For David, insurance isn't about numbers or policies—it's about people. "The thing that I enjoy most about my role as an adviser? Meeting new people, learning about their families and businesses, and helping them plan for their future."

Outside of work, David loves spending time with his two adult children and his wife of 42 years, Jocelyn, who runs her own legal practice. He's also heavily involved in the Cambridge community, as chair of the Cambridge Community Charitable Trust, trustee of the Give It Back Charitable Trust,  former chair of Hautapu School BOT and an honorary member of Rotary Cambridge.

Faye Thornton

Office Manager

For over 21 years, Faye has been making clients' lives easier by managing their insurance claims. "I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing that my experience in handling claims will help them when they need it most."

But there are many more strings to Faye's bow. She also takes care of the financial side of the business and manages our office. She's a Registered Financial Adviser (RFA) and holds a National Certificate in Financial Services (Level 5).

Faye knows first-hand how stressful life can be during a crisis, having faced a life-threatening illness herself. "I know that dealing with an insurance company at that time is the last thing on your mind," Faye says. "So I really enjoy helping our clients achieve a positive outcome at a really stressful time of their lives."

Nicky Revell

Administration Manager
Whose is that cheery voice you hear over the phone when you call us? Chances are, it's Nicky's.

Nicky handles client communications and manages our databases. She also assists David and Faye with our day-to-day operations: policy enquiries, claims queries, and pretty much anything else our clients need. Nicky gets a real buzz out of getting great results for clients. "The most rewarding part of my job is securing good outcomes," she says. "Nothing beats that."

Her other "job" is being a mum to two daughters. Her partner, like a lot of Cambridge folk, is a keen cyclist, so you'll often find her watching him in action at the Cambridge Avantidrome.

Toni Thomson

Kiwisaver Adviser

Toni has recently joined the team at Cooney Insurance as a Specialist KiwiSaver Adviser.

Toni is a Registered Financial Adviser and a Chartered Accountant with 20 years’ experience in the accountancy industry in both public and private practices.

Her goal as a KiwiSaver Adviser is to ensure that everyone is maximising their return potential on their KiwiSaver investments.

Outside of the office Toni and her partner Lee are kept very busy with their 4 boys.
